Best Month for Sunrise and Sunset Selfies

The Best Time Each Month to Take Sunset & Sunrise Selfies

Selfies dominate social media feeds, and after being inundated with them for years on end, it’s clear that not all selfies are made equal. With the rise of social media influences such as Kim Kardashian West and her half-sister Kylie Jenner, social media has adopted a series of unwritten rules that make some selfies superior to others.

According to Allure Magazine, lighting is the most important aspect when capturing the perfect picture to post for your followers. While flash is a viable option, there is no replacement for natural lighting. They implore their readers to always try moving from areas of unflattering, fluorescent light to nearby windows that offer fewer shadows and enhance your natural glow.

To avoid harsh shadows, it’s ideal to time your selfies to when the sun is ascending early in the morning, or just before it dips below the horizon at night. With this in mind, we wanted to create a guide for all the light-conscious selfie-takers out there. Using astronomy data from, we looked at the best average time for a sunrise and sunset selfie throughout the year and in each city. To find out the ideal time of day to snap your most flattering photos, check out our results below!

When it comes to catching the sun on it’s way up, you’re going to have to sacrifice some sleep. Catching the latest sunrise of the year, which takes place in January, will still typically get you out of bed and ready to smile before 7:30 AM. This time gets earlier and earlier as you make your way towards the summer. In the month of June, the average sunrise happens at 5:48 AM. Getting up that early to treat your followers with a cute selfie takes some serious dedication. Let’s be honest though, summer is more of a sunset vibe anyways, and now we know why.

On the other side of the spectrum, catching the sun on its descent is a little bit easier. We all know that golden hour is the undisputed best time of day for photos, even if you might’ve lost a little of that “morning glow”. Sunset times vary significantly by month, so you’ve gotta be on top of your game if you don’t want to miss out. In the winter, the sun is set before the dinner table is, with the earliest ones of the year coming in December, before 5 PM. In the summer, however, you can catch those golden rays as late as 8:30 PM in July. Late-night golden hours and fireworks backdrops make July a selfie-takers dream.
