Three Easy Ways to Child-Proof Your Windows

Welcoming a child into the world is always an enriching, rewarding experience. You love, guide, and protect them throughout their lives, but those first few precious years present new parents with an increased need to prevent any sort of harm that could come to them. That’s why they go to such great lengths to ensure every inch of every room is safe for children.

Whether they’re plugging all of their electrical outlets, locking up sharp knives and utensils, installing comprehensive alarm systems or securing furniture to the walls – the process of child-proofing your home can feel downright obsessive compulsive at times. Still, with all of the different parts and pieces in the home that could one day present harm, many parents overlook the dangers lingering right in front of their faces. We’re talking about window covering cords.

It’s easy to forget about windows and blinds when you bring a new addition home – after all, you now have a million other things to worry about. But, once your babies become mobile, your window treatments, especially if they are corded, should immediately skyrocket to the top of your mind.

The team here at Next Day Blinds takes window covering safety seriously, so we’re extending a few tips to help you ensure your children are always around your windows.

According to the Window Covering Safety Council, following these three handy guidelines will help you ensure a safe and happy home for your little ones:

  • Install only cordless window coverings or those with inaccessible cords in homes with young children. Replace window blinds and corded shades with products that are cordless or have inaccessible cords marked with the Best for Kids™ certification label.
  • Move all cribs, beds, furniture, and toys away from windows and window covering cords.
  • When window covering cords are present, ensure that all window covering cords are out of sight and reach, by shortening or moving them up and away, so that they are inaccessible to young children.

Another way to ensure that your windows are child-proof is to only purchase and install the highest quality window treatments available to you. Children are curious beings, so if they encounter a window treatment for the first time, they’re likely to try to reach for them.

Cordless Honeycomb Shades
Cordless Honeycomb Shades are a great, child-safe option for parents.

Before that milestone occurs, make sure your blinds and shades are securely fashioned to their surfaces so they will remain either out-of-reach of your children or sturdy enough to withstand any wear that children are uniquely qualified to produce.

So, whether you’re a parent of young children or have one on the way, be sure to double-check your windows to make sure they’re as safe as they can be.
