Custom Wood Shutters for Arched Windows

Arched windows are some of the most graceful window shapes, adding classic design and architectural interest to your home.

“Windows come in all shapes and sizes, yet the one thing they have in common is their purpose: controlling light and privacy,” writes Steven Randel, a California licensed architect specializing in residential projects. But they cannot do it alone. Windows need a bit of help, which is why finding the right window treatments is a very important consideration in any homeowner or interior designer’s overall design plan. Important, but not always easy.

“We know the struggle is real when it comes to finding the right dressing solution for awkward windows,” says Erin Hawkins of NousDecor, a company that helps make professional interior design services accessible to everyone. Take arched windows, for example. These magnificent and eye-catching architectural additions scream elegance. They scream design. And they can leave homeowners screaming in frustration.

“Arched windows are some of the most graceful window shapes, adding classic design and architectural interest to your home,” writes Kelley Walters of DIY Network, “but their lovely silhouette also makes them tough to cover.”

Arched windows present several design challenges not present in most other windows. 1) The arch. This oddly-shaped and aesthetically pleasing feature is a double-edged sword. It looks great, adding dimension to a room, but it is also difficult to cover. Most window treatments tend to be very boxy with lots of right angles, which certainly will not work in this situation. 2) The height. Many arched windows tend to be quite large, which presents an entirely new set of problems for homeowners. You need a way to accentuate the aesthetically pleasing aspects of your tall window while still providing energy efficiency and, perhaps most importantly, light control and privacy.

“Figuring out how to cover arched windows — for privacy or aesthetics — can be difficult,” writes Shane Inman, president and senior principal interior designer of The Inman Company. Difficult, but not impossible.

Our Recommendation: Custom Wood Shutters

“For oversize arched windows in rooms that scream for privacy, install custom-made louvered shutters for a professional fit,” writes Inman. “Custom shutters elevate the design of any room, as they look more like an architectural element than a window treatment.”
