Home Decor Preferences by Gender, Generation and Zodiac Sign

We conducted a study to see how home decorating preferences correspond with zodiac sign, gender & generation. See if your personality matches your decor!

The way you choose to decorate your home says a lot about your personality, whether you intend for that to be the case or not. Your home is, by definition, an environment you feel comfortable in, and what makes it comfortable for you means a lot. It depends on your personality, your aesthetic, and the kind of decor you’re used to. Because zodiac signs are supposed to set a baseline for our personalities, we wondered if there were trends within the zodiac signs that translated into home decor preferences. So we decided to find out.

Our team polled over 600 people to find out what their home decor preferences are and how they correspond to their zodiac sign, gender, and generation. The results are below and they might surprise you!

Modern design was the big winner for interior design style across most of the zodiac signs. Only two zodiac signs had differing results. Cancers were most likely to choose Vintage interior design styles, and Scorpios were most likely to choose Rustic interior design. A high percentage of Tauruses also chose Vintage design style, in fact, it was the runner up for a few of the zodiac signs including Aquarius, Leo, Libra, Pisces, Sagittarius, and Virgo. The runner-up for Capricorns was Scandinavian Design, Aries’s tended to choose Minimalism as their second choice, and Rustic design came in second for Geminis and Leos.

Beachside Cottages was the most popular home type selected by people born under the signs of Gemini, Leo, Pisces, Scorpio, and Virgo. Meanwhile, Aries, Cancer, Capricorn, and Libra were most likely to choose a house in the suburbs. Aquarius was the only sign most likely to choose a city apartment as their dream home, and Taurus was the only sign most likely to choose a log cabin in the woods.

According to our survey, Virgo was most likely to have a regimented weekly cleaning routine. Overall, people did not claim to be neat freaks very often, but Pisces had the highest percentage of neat freaks at a whopping 16% of people saying they cannot live in a messy house. Meanwhile, Sagittarius was the only sign with a higher percentage of people saying they try to clean regularly and keep the clutter to a minimum. Not a single person admitted to having a black hole for a house, where things enter but never return!

Window Treatment Preferences

Overall, people tended to choose blinds over any other type of window treatment. Only 1 in 4 people chose curtains over blinds.

Every single star sign overwhelmingly wanted their home to be welcoming to their friends and family. The runner up home decor vibe for Aquarius, Pisces, Scorpio, Taurus, and Virgo was cool. For Aries and Capricorn, zen was the second most common feeling they want their home to convey.  The runner-up for both Sagittariuses and Leos was simple, and Libra had zen and simple tied for second.

DIY projects are a commonly incorporated part of home decor. Unsurprisingly, Millennials are most likely to use DIY projects to supplement their home decor, and women were more likely than men to try DIY.
