Interior Design Trends: Geometric Patterns

“The reason for their longevity is that geometric prints and shapes are versatile enough to accommodate a range of tastes and can easily be integrated with whatever interior design trend is popular any given year,” says Jennifer Worden, interior design blogger.

Interior design trends come and go with the seasons, but certain trends have been around so long, it’s hard to even call them trends. The use of Geometric Patterns is one of those. We have seen geometric patterns pop up in homes for decades.

“The reason for their longevity is that geometric prints and shapes are versatile enough to accommodate a range of tastes and can easily be integrated with whatever interior design trend is popular any given year,” says Jennifer Worden, interior design blogger.

Simple Ways to Incorporate Geometric Patterns in Your Home

“Great interior design is all about understanding which elements of the room should play a dominant role and which should act as more of an assisting or accenting feature,” says Tara Mastroeni, Freshome. “It should go without saying that patterns should be more of an accent role.”

Here are a few easy ways to add geometric intrigue to your home without overwhelming the senses.

Rugs

If you are unsure how to incorporate geometric patterns into your interior and don’t want to take any risks, “start with an area rug and then work your way through other pieces,” says Liz Toombs, president of PDR Interiors. Area rugs are quick, they’re simple, and “rugs as statement pieces are making a comeback,” adds Worden.

Just find an area rug you like and work from there as you quite literally lay the groundwork of your new geometric interior.

Window Treatments

Small doses of geometric patterns can go a long way and “make this trend more palatable,” says Darla DeMorrow, author of “Organizing Your Home with SORT and Succeed.” Consider layering geometric patterned curtains over solid colored shades for a dynamic look that pairs visual intrigue and usability. The curtains draw the eye, giving your room the visual accent you are looking for, while the shade does the dirty work, handling light control and increasing energy efficiency.

Roller Shades and Honeycomb Shades pair nicely with curtains. Our Light Filtering Roller Shades Mode Collection also comes in a geometric pattern that is sure to make a statement in any room.

Tiles

Particularly in the kitchen or bathroom, tilework is a great opportunity to add some geometric flair to your home. “Whether you choose your tile based on pattern or shape, geometric tiles will freshen up the space and give it a contemporary look,” says Worden. Geometrics pop nicely on a backsplash, especially in an otherwise boring kitchen, says Geddes. Geometric tiles also work really well when used as bathroom flooring. It’s a surprisingly stunning way to take your bathroom to the next level. Plus, tiled floors making cleaning a breeze.

Walls

If you want to be a bit bolder, incorporating geometric patterns in your walls can make a real statement. Just be sure to balance pattern and color. “Too much of any one pattern or color can be garish and jarring,” says Jennifer Geddes. So, instead of turning your interior into a funhouse, focus on a single statement wall. Or you can work on a slightly smaller scale and incorporate some geometric-themed artwork and wall hangings.

“If you’re looking for a way to incorporate geometric patterns into your home that will stand the test of time, invest in wall art with a geometric style and honeycomb shelves for a subtle nod to the trend,” says Worden.
