How To Pair Window Treatments with Popular Wall Colors
The right color can really transform an interior, and “a fresh coat of paint is the easiest way to make a change at home,” says Jeanine Hays, HGTV. And when paired with the right window treatments, the combination can be quite stunning.
“No matter how fine your furnishings, the pieces must complement each other or you won’t have a pleasing space,” writes Leah James, SFGATE. “That’s especially true of walls and window treatments given that they abut.” So, it’s important to put careful thought and care into your window treatment/wall color pairings. Here are a few suggestions based on this year’s hottest interior wall colors according to Consumer Reports.
BEHR: IN THE MOMENT T18-15
Erika Woelfel, vice president of color and creative services at Behr, describes In the Moment T18-15 as “a perfect balance between blue and green.” This peaceful, relaxing color works well with whites, taupes, grays, and browns. It’s also Behr’s 2018 Color of the Year and works across multiple design styles – traditional, modern, coastal and global décor.
Our Window Treatment Pairing Recommendation: Behr’s In the Moment pairs well with light colored blinds or shades, especially crisp whites. This is why we recommend our Light Filtering Honeycomb Shades in Cotton. These shades are one of the “hottest new trends in window shades,” writes Christie Craig, Houston Lifestyles & Homes Magazine. “and are designed for light filtering or for the total blocking of sunlight.” In other words, they are incredibly stylish and functional.
Another stunning options is our Premium Cordless Wood Blinds in Bright White. These window treatments are “equally at home in traditional paneled or rustic-style homes and more modern spaces,” says Leslie Plummer Clagett, This Old House.
HGTV HOME BY SHERWIN-WILLIAMS: HONEYCOMB HGSW2133
Ashley Banbury, senior designer for HGTV Home by Sherwin-Williams, describes Honeycomb HGSW2133 as “a rich golden yellow that brings rays of sunshine that radiate warmth and comfort to liven up any space.” This vivid color really helps your interior pop!
Our Window Treatment Pairing Recommendation: Because Honeycomb HGSW2133 is so bright, it is important that your window treatments help bring out this color even more. This is why we recommend shades that let in the light, like our Solar Deco Sheers 5% in Parchment. Using a nice neutral can help “tone down the overall look” when you’ve used “strong color on your walls,” says James. Or, if you want to be a bit bolder, you can our Sheer Honeycomb Shades in Black Suede provide a sharp contrast with the golden yellow paint color. The end result is a stunning interior that not only floods your room with natural light, but the contrast also “makes the biggest visual statement,” says Stefanie Schiada, Glidden.
SHERWIN-WILLIAMS: OCEANSIDE SW6496
Sue Wadden, director of color marketing at Sherwin-Williams, says Oceanside SW6496 is “inspired by wanderlust and global interconnectedness.” This beautiful green-blue hue works “just about anywhere,” adds Wadden, but is best when mixed with whites, creams, deep rich tones, and warm metallics.
Our Window Treatment Pairing Recommendation: While a crisp white window treatment might be nice, we tend to gravitate towards the deep rich tones, which is why we recommend pairing this beautiful green-blue paint with our Premium Wood Blinds in Golden Chestnut. Wood blinds “add a feeling of warmth and coziness to the atmosphere in the room” and “give a natural look to the room with a graceful charm,” says Jimmy Sturo of Ezine Articles.
Another great option is our Hardwood Shutters in Dark Wood Paint or Stain. “We make all of our shutters the old fashioned way,” says Steve Freishtat, Next Day Blinds CEO and Founder, “assembled by hand.” Our paint is a furniture-grade and lacquer-based paint, and we offer several low-formaldehyde, low-odor stain options as well. We paint and stain all of our shutter components in-house, which lets us better control the entire process from start to finish.
BENJAMIN MOORE: CALIENTE AF-290
Andrea Magno, senior manager of color and design at Benjamin Moore, describes Caliente AF-290 as “a vivid, charismatic red, yet livable.” It’s the perfect color to give your interior some attitude without being overwhelming. “People want more oomph,” says Magno, and Caliente is just what the doctor ordered. However, as we mentioned in a previous blog, decorating with red “isn’t for the faint of heart,” says Jeannie Matteucci, HGTV. It requires a keen eye for design and careful consideration, especially when it comes to choosing accent pieces, like window treatments.
Our Window Treatment Pairing Recommendation: The bold red walls deserve an equally bold window treatment that provides a sharp contrast. This is why we recommend our Premium Wood Blinds in Espresso. These blinds “are both functional and a creative design element,” says Blaze Makoid, who has been practicing architecture and design since graduating from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1985. Wood blinds look great, yes, but they are also an effective tool when it comes to light control and privacy.
Or, if you want a more calm and soothing look and feel for your interior, our Light Filtering Honeycomb Shades in Honeysuckle just might do the trick. The calming cream color of the shade works well with the boldness of Caliente. Plus, the light filtering ability of the shades and the resulting natural light it allows to flood your space really helps the paint color pop.
OLYMPIC: BLACK MAGIC OL116
Dee Schlotter, senior color marketing manager for Olympic, describes Black Magic OL116 as “a true black—no undertones.” According to her, “this is the blackest black in the Olympic palette.” However, black can also be particularly difficult to work with. If you are not careful, your interior may soon become overly dark, cramped, and heavy. So, it is important to choose accents that help lighten things up just a bit.
“Dark walls can make a room seem smaller than it is, but if you coordinate all the colors in the room, this creates a visual cohesion that stretches the boundaries of the walls,” says Abhishek Jain, Barn & Willow.
Our Window Treatment Pairing Recommendation: Dark colors, like black, “make such a great backdrop for lots of different textures and colours,” says interior designer Michele Birch. Jain, meanwhile, recommends choosing a window treatment color that contrasts your dark walls to “draw attention to your windows.” Taking both of these recommendations into consideration, we suggest going with an elegant fabric shade, like our Savannah Shadings in Porcelain. These unique window treatments are truly the best of both worlds, combining the benefits of blinds and shades. Like the slats on traditional wood or aluminum horizontal blinds Savannah Shadings feature vanes that can be tilted open or closed for superior light control. Meanwhile, these vanes float between two sheer fabric panels, giving you the light-filtering qualities of solar shades and allowing soft light to flood your room while still blocking unwanted UV rays and glare.
Another equally elegant option is our Soft Roman Shades in Seaglass. These modern and sophisticated window treatments are some of the most popular window treatments on the market because they are such a great way to treat windows. “If drapes are too fussy and blinds are too cold, roman shades offer a classy and practical alternative that warm up windows while providing privacy and protection from the sun,” says interior designer Killy Scheer.
BEHR: MOUNTAIN SAGE PMD-36
According to Caroline Picard and Lauren Smith, House Beautiful, sage is Pinterest’s new “it” color for 2018. “The greyish green color is soft and muted, but not boring,” say the design bloggers. Mountain Sage PMD-36 provides a gentle calming feeling, giving your interior a spa-like quality.
Our Window Treatment Pairing Recommendation: In trying to keep the calming quality of the wall color intact, we recommend a pairing that is equally as calm and down to earth. The warm colors and natural materials of our Woven Wood Shades in Pina Beach pair nicely with the greyish green color. These beautiful window treatments “enhance and warm almost any decor,” says interior designer Becky Dietrich, bringing “a distinctly organic texture to a room.”
Another excellent option is our Light Filtering Roller Shades in Lylith Oatmeal. Any room with “poor lighting will feel cave like and claustrophobic,” says Wendy Cassidy, Freshome. Our light filtering shades help lighten up a room in more ways than one, diffusing an interior with calming natural light.
