Pet-Friendly Blinds and Window Treatments

Do you consider your pet to be a part of your family? You aren't alone. 63% of pet owners feel the same way. Here are our top picks for pet-friendly blinds and shades.

Do you consider your pet to be a part of your family? You aren’t alone. In fact, six-out-of-ten pet owners (63.2 percent) feel the same way, according to the American Veterinary Medical Association’s (AVMA) 2012 U.S. Pet Ownership & Demographics Sourcebook. In the United States alone, there are approximately 70 million pet dogs and 74.1 million pet cats in 43,346,000 (36.5 percent) and 36,117,000 (30.4 percent) homes, respectively. Needless to say, that is a large portion of the population.

Originally founded in 2006 by Animal Welfare Advocate Colleen Paige, who believes all animals “deserve our love and compassion…even not-so-cuddly animals like reptiles and rats,” National Pet Day has become a cultural phenomenon, with large companies and organizations such as Coca-Cola, Major League Baseball, Victoria’s Secret, and Good Morning America joining the cause. Even former President Barack Obama took to Twitter to show his support. So we thought we would do our part by educating the public about pet-friendly window treatments.

🐱 Our Recommendation for Cat Owners: Go Cordless

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), window cords are one of the top five “hidden hazards” in the home. While this most often applies to small children, cats and cords don’t mix either. Our furry, four-legged friends sometimes mistake dangling cords for cat toys, which can lead to broken window treatments and even dangerous entanglements. “Your cat could strangle themselves by getting the cord wound around their neck or choke on a plastic pull that they’ve chewed into pieces [sic],” warns The Humane Society of the United State. To prevent this, homeowners with cats have two options. 1) Tuck window cords out of sight, or 2) invest in cordless window treatments. The latter is the best cat proof window blinds option.

Cordless Blinds and Shades allow you to raise and lower your window treatments without a free-hanging cord. Besides the added safety factor, this unique functionality also offers several additional benefits. For starters, cordless window treatments are easy to operate. Simply lift up and down. Then, of course, comes aesthetic appeal. Cordless window coverings give your windows a more streamlined, modern look that is sure to compliment your home decor. No more cords to try and hide. No more cords for your dog or cat to play with and ultimately ruin your window treatments. No more cords to…well, just no more cords. Period. Sleek, easy to use, and safe, cordless is the future of window coverings. Next Day Blinds offers an array of cordless products, including Motorized Blinds and Shades that can be operated by remote control, mobile app, or voice command.

🐶 Our Recommendation for Dog Owners: Durability and Functionality

When it comes to man’s best friend and your blinds or shades, the problem isn’t playfulness as much as curiosity. While cats like to lounge in windows and play with cords, dogs want to know what is going on in the world outside. This is typically true for two reasons:

Furniture Fading with Dog

  1. What was that? Dogs are curious creatures by habit and are easily distracted by what’s going on around them. This includes what’s going on outside, and window treatments are just an obstruction keeping them from a clear view of that squirrel, or the mailman, or whatever may be going on outside.
  2. Where are you going? Some dogs suffer from separation anxiety whenever their owners leave the house. Your dog runs, barks, climbs on furniture, and jump in the windows to watch you leave.“Dogs with separation anxiety exhibit distress and behavior problems when they’re left alone,” says The Humane Society. “But remember, your dog’s behaviors are part of a panic response. Your dog isn’t trying to punish you! They just want you to come home!”

First, it is important to train your dog how to behave when you leave the house. The Humane Society recommends the following steps: 1) Don’t make a big deal out of arrivals and departures — ignore your dog for the first few minutes then calmly pet them. 2) Leave your dog with recently worn clothes that smell like you. 3) Establish a word or action that you use every time you leave that tells your dog you’ll be back. 4) Consider using an over-the-counter calming product that reduces fearfulness in dogs.

Dog Friendly Vertical Blinds

The right dog proof window treatments can also make a difference as well. Shutters are incredibly durable, strong enough to stand up to even the most rambunctious pup. You can also opt for Top Down/Bottom Up Honeycomb Shades, which allow you to block temptation, while still allowing natural light to illuminate your home. It’s the best of both worlds. Another option, particularly effective in large expanses and glass doors, are Vertical Blinds. These window treatments won’t keep your dog from looking out the window, but they will allow your dog to do so without damaging your blinds. Your furry friend can simply nudge the slats out of the way to get a better view.
