Small Living Room Updates That Make a Big Impact

You don’t need to spend a lot to make a big impact. A few easy updates and the right accessories can be all you need to completely revamp your living room.

“A full living room update — with new flooring, furniture and wall color — is the ideal home makeover,” says Erika Riggs, Zillow. “However, limited time and budget can make a full revamp out of the question.”

Fortunately, you don’t need to spend a lot to make a big impact. A few easy updates and the right accessories can be all you need to completely revamp your living room.

Simple Living Room “Remodel”

“Decorating doesn’t have to burn a hole in your pocket or take months to complete,” said designer Vanessa DeLeon. “Set aside a weekend when you are looking for a change and a little upgrade.”

Declutter

Before you even think of adding to your decor, try to declutter your living room. “Get rid of things that you have no use for,” says DeLeon. “Cleaning out the space will make it look like a brand new room.”

Once your room is a little less cluttered, you can also try rearranging what you already have. Sometimes this simple act is enough to breathe new life into a room. “This is no doubt the least expensive way to update a room because it’s totally free,” says Lauren Flanagan, The Spruce. “Moving the furniture around gives your room a whole new look and can satisfy your need for change without any cost.”

Accent Piece Power

The best kind of update is the one that takes minimal effort.

  • Accent Rug: Adding a rug to your existing decor. “Even layered over carpet, rugs can define or refine a space,” says designer Dan Benedict. “Too much dark flooring? Use a light colored rug. Want to warm up flooring that is too light? Choose a darker rug.” You will be surprised at just how much difference this simple update can make.
  • Throw Pillows: “Furniture, besides flooring, is one of the priciest ways to update a room,” says Riggs. So, before you consider swapping out that couch, try something more cost-conscious, like a few throw pillows. “Adding pillows and throw blankets is a great way to add color and texture, and the impact they create can give your room a fresh new look,” says Flanagan, “particularly if you change them with the seasons.”

Window Treatments Work Wonders

“Window treatments are one of the most budget-friendly ways to add some elegance to your home, as well as much-needed privacy,” says Shelley Little, Freshome – not to mention coveted natural light. The right window treatments can work wonders on a room.

Window Treatment Recommendation: You can’t go wrong with Wood Blinds. These window treatments remain one of the most popular choices for living rooms because of their traditional look, aesthetic appeal, and light control. Wood blinds “add a feeling of warmth and coziness to the atmosphere in the room” and “give a natural look to the room with a graceful charm,” says Jimmy Sturo of Ezine Articles. “They are equally at home in traditional paneled or rustic-style homes and more modern spaces,” adds Leslie Plummer Clagett of This Old House.

Accent Your Wall

A fresh coat of paint, “doesn’t cost much, but sometimes it makes a huge difference,” says interior designer Susan Gale. However, there is a simple way to save even more money (and time) while still making a big impact – an accent wall.

Instead of painting all four walls in the living room, choose one and create an accent wall, “adding a necessary focal point,” says DeLeon. This can be all you need to turn from ordinary to extraordinary. And don’t be afraid to think outside the box. “Your accent wall may be perfect for stripes or for a specialty paint finish,” says Diana Hathaway Timmons, The Spruce. “Don’t forget that wallpaper is a gorgeous choice for accent walls.”
