Get a jump on summer with these interior design ideas, which truly embrace the changing seasons and are sure to brighten up your space.

Interior Design Ideas for Summer 2018

As summer quickly approaches, people everywhere are packing away their long-sleeved shirts and sweaters in favor of shorts and sundresses to accommodate the changing weather. However, “the bright breezy attitude of the season can inspire more than a change in fashion and your mood,” says author Shannon Kaiser. “You can take the same carefree essence of the season and apply it to your living space.”

So, start packing away those spring decorations and truly embrace the changing of the seasons with a few simple interior updates.

"If you’re looking to update your home/flat/room this season, then there are some key interior trends you should know about for summer 2018."

POPS OF SUMMER COLORS

“Bold pops of color is one of the strongest trends coming through for us this season,” says Sophie Warren-Smith, House Beautiful, who has identified a few trendy color choices.

  • Gelato colours are going to be a huge trend in both interiors and fashion this year,” says Warren-Smith.
  • “Last year the metallic trend started to filter through into paints and metal finishes, this year gold is the key color,” says Warren-Smith. “It brings its own elegance together with a sense of decadence.”
  • “Another color trend is inky blues,” like indigo, says Warren-Smith.

So, what color is best for your interior? Well, that is entirely up to you. It’s all about transforming your living space to better reflect your “personal style,” explains Sam Hood, founder and creative director of Amara. One quick and easy way to infuse a bit of bold color into your home is with some new window treatments. Next Day Blinds Honeycomb Shades, for example, come in 129 different colors, including a few of your favorite gelato colors.

GEOMETRIC DESIGN

In our post on Spring Interior Design Trends, we mentioned how geometric patterns would be big. And that trend continues into the summer months. “[This year] will be dominated by pattern,” says interior designer Martyn Lawrence Bullard. One great way to incorporate these patterns into your decor is with your window treatments. At Next Day Blinds, our Mode Roller Shades allow you to seamlessly blend geometric patterns throughout the home.

“Don’t feel like your home needs to have all modern design in order to add geometric patterns,” says Jeffrey Weldler, marketing director with VÄNT Wall Panels. Geometric patterns have a place in all different decors.

BRING THE OUTDOORS IN

Perhaps the best way to fully embrace the season is to bring the outdoors indoors. This will help your indoor and outdoor spaces feel more cohesive, says Liz Stiving-Nichols of Martha’s Vineyard Interior Design. Our Woven Wood Shades are made locally using premium natural bamboo, reeds, woods, and grasses, for beautiful results. These shades “bring a distinctly organic texture to a room,” says interior designer Becky Dietrich, and “enhance and warm almost any decor, from modern to country.”

A BRIGHT NEW LOOK

One of the most compelling elements of the summer season has to be the sunlight. However, with that beautiful natural light also comes immense heat, which can really put a strain on your air conditioner. So, how do you take full advantage of the light, while blocking heat and harmful UV rays? Window treatments, of course!

Solar Shades from Next Day Blinds help absorb heat, reduce glare from sunlight, and block up to 90-99% of harmful UV rays, while still allowing natural light to flood your interior. “These light and elegant shades block blinding sunlight yet let the good light through,” says interior designer Rebekah Zaveloff. The key is the fabric opacity. These window treatments are “available in varying degrees of ‘open-ness,’” explains interior designer Mike Strutt. The Openness Factor is expressed as a percentage (ranging from 1% to 10%), and indicates the quantity of light that the shade will let in. Fabrics with higher Openness Factor will let in more light and provide a clearer view.
