What it Means to be Certified “Best for Kids”
Next Day Blinds is committed to incorporating the latest and most effective child-safe technologies in our products.
From 2006 to 2012, 1,590 children between the ages of 14 months and eight-years-old suffered injuries resulting from entanglements on window covering cords, based on estimates from the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission. Parents have a million and one things on their minds when it comes to raising their children. Whether or not their blinds or shades pose a threat to their children should not be one of them. Yet, window cord strangulation remain “one of the top hidden hazards in the home,” says U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) Chairman Inez Tenenbaum. This is because most blinds and shades made more than a decade ago utilize unsafe cord systems. And as stated on the Window Covering Safety Council (WCSC) website, “Children and window cords don’t mix.” For this reason, the WCSC, the CPSC, and government safety officials recommend that you only use cordless window products in homes with young children. So, isn’t it time you update your window treatments?
"Parents who check their windows and window coverings for safety and replace their older corded blinds, shades and draperies with cordless products can feel more confident about their child’s well-being."
Certified Best for Kids by Window Covering Manufacturers Association
The Best for Kids program is a third-party certification program designed to help consumers and retailers identify window covering products that are certified as safe for homes with young children. To participate, manufacturers, like Next Day Blinds, must have their blinds and shades assessed by Intertek to determine whether or not they meet the program’s stringent criteria. This criteria requires that the product either has no cords, no operating cords, or the inner cords cannot be accessible or form a loop, as defined by the industry’s safety standard. Products that meet these criteria will be eligible to be listed and labeled on packaging and materials as “certified,” and companies can use this designation on their marketing materials.
“We are pleased that many retailers are embracing the Best for Kids program,” said WCMA Executive Director Ralph Vasami. “The program provides clarity to retailers and consumers who now can easily identify those products that have been independently tested specifically to meet the program’s criteria.”
