October Marks Window Covering Safety Month
As a member of the WCSC, Next Day Blinds is committed to incorporating the latest and most effective child-safe technologies in our products.
October is Window Covering Safety Month, an annual awareness campaign sponsored by the Window Covering Safety Council (WCSC) in conjunction with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). Each October, these organizations urge parents and caregivers to check their window treatments for exposed or dangling cords, which can pose a threat to young children.
“WCSC is urging parents and caregivers to replace older window coverings in their home with today’s safer alternatives, such as cordless designs,” says Rush. In addition, the WCSC encourages parents and caregivers to follow these basic cord-safety precautions:
- If you are unable to replace your existing treatments, keep window cords out of the reach of children.
- Ensure tasseled pull cords are as short as possible.
- Continuous-loop pull cords on draperies and vertical blinds should be pulled tight and anchored to the floor or wall.
- Check to make sure cord stops are properly installed and adjusted to limit inner-cord movement.
- Move furniture, cribs, beds, and other climbable surfaces away from windows.
“Each year, with the help of the CPSC, we continue to raise awareness of this important issue,” says Rush.
Cordless Window Treatments
“As a result of industry innovation, consumers have more choices than ever to purchase cordless products or those with inaccessible cords,” says Rush. “Parents with young children should replace their corded window coverings with the many cordless products available in different styles, colors and sizes “

Certified Best for Kids
All Next Day Blinds cordless products are also Certified Best for Kids through the Window Covering Manufacturers Association (WCMA) certification program – a third-party certification program designed to help consumers and retailers identify window covering products that are certified as safe for homes with young children. To participate, manufacturers, like Next Day Blinds, must have their blinds and shades assessed by Intertek to determine whether or not they meet the program’s stringent criteria. This criteria requires that the product either has no cords, no operating cords, or the inner cords cannot be accessible or form a loop, as defined by the industry’s safety standard.
“The program provides clarity to retailers and consumers who now can easily identify those products that have been independently tested specifically to meet the program’s criteria,” says WCMA Executive Director Ralph Vasami. “We are pleased that many retailers are embracing the Best for Kids program.”
“Parents who replace their older window coverings with the new cordless products can feel more confident about their child’s safety,” says Rush.
